What is Vulnerability Assessment?
This is a term of two different words, Vulnerability and Assessment.
Vulnerability means the state of being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally.
Assessment means evaluation or rating or appraisal.
Vulnerability assessment is the process of identifying if there exists vulnerability in a system, quantifying the exposure, and prioritizing the treatment. Systems for which vulnerability assessments are performed include but are not limited to is information technology system.
Organizations of any size, or even individuals, can benefit from vulnerability assessment, but large enterprises and other types of organizations that are subject to ongoing attacks benefit more. Here, we focus on Cyber Security….as to how anyone can benefit from vulnerability assessment (here after called VA).
Cyber/ Information Technology/ Digitization whatever we may address, VA helps us to be much more well protected with efficient and better control. But lets look at the other side of VA …Let’s compare it to a very common scenario around all of us.. Like all we all have lockers in our banks, houses or simply the main lock of our house. Before we use it or install it we have numerous questions towards security, accessibility, control system…every possible wrong thought that can come in our minds to be 100% sure of our belongings……we even get our valuables insured against theft, fire and many other circumstances. So, when we are so bothered about tangible or material possessions shouldn’t we be extremely concerned about our work, personal information, account information…..or as common as our whereabouts being known to a stranger with an evil intention.
Because security vulnerabilities attract hackers to access IT systems and applications, it is of absolute significance for enterprises to identify weaknesses before they can be exploited. A complete and thorough vulnerability assessment along with a management program can help companies to protect the security of their systems.
Why is it SO Important?
Prevention is always better than cure and this approach drives us to be safe and prepared always. This is where VA can help us know where all and what type of problems exist and what it can lead to and of course… the solutions. A vulnerability assessment provides an organization with facts on the security weaknesses in its environment and provides solutions on how to mitigate the risks with those weaknesses. This process facilitates an overview of better understanding of assets, security flaws and overall risk to an organization, reducing the probability that a bad actor is able to breach through the systems and impact the business.
